Background of the Study

Digital badges are a form of recognition for the achievement of specific skills, knowledge, or competencies, often awarded through online platforms. These badges serve as a modern alternative to traditional certifications, providing students with a tangible, verifiable indicator of their accomplishments. In education, digital badges are increasingly being used to assess skills beyond academic performance, such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and digital literacy. By allowing students to earn badges for mastering particular skills, educators can provide a more comprehensive and individualized assessment of student progress.

In Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State, secondary schools often rely on traditional assessment methods, such as exams and written assignments, to evaluate students’ performance. While these methods measure academic knowledge, they may not fully capture the range of skills that students acquire during their education. This study aims to explore the use of digital badges as a tool for skill assessment, examining how this innovative approach can complement traditional assessment methods and provide a more holistic view of student achievement.
